Jobs: Steve Buyer has held 6 job fair offering over 9,000 jobs to Hoosiers seeking a new start or a new opportunity. Approximately 200 Hoosiers have walked away the day of the events with a new job in hand-- with hundreds upon hundreds with new opportunities.

Health Care: Hospitals often struggle to meet the needs of local, rural, communities. Steve Buyer understands the importance of the doctor-patient relationship and has worked to ensure the viability of community health care at an affordable cost. He authored language, now law, regarding critical care hospitals to help our smaller, rural Indiana hospitals. In fact, the leadership of the hospitals helped by Steve Buyer’s actions said if he had not successfully won efforts to help them-- that they may have closed. Because of Steve Buyer’s leadership, now White County Hospital in Monticello, and others, are in much better financial position and can better treat patients in need of care.

Crane Naval Warfare Center: When the Crane Naval Warfare Center was targeted for closure and/or a reduction in operations, Steve Buyer worked to not only keep Crane open but helped win new and expanded operations at the facility--effectively keeping thousands of jobs in Indiana.

Transportation: Lafayette and West Lafayette came to Steve Buyer for help to replace their existing bus fleet which was rapidly aging. He led bipartisan efforts for $2.5 million in federal funding to accommodate projected growth in riders and fund new buses.

Clean Water Supply: When it was learned that the city of Martinsville had contaminated water wells and that its only water storage tank was falling apart (literally), Steve Buyer’s leadership lead to almost $1 million dollars in federal funding to relocate the water wells and build a new water storage tank—providing safe water for families to drink. The new tank will begin providing safe water to residents in 2008.

Shelly Drain: When Steve Buyer learned that Montgomery County did not have the money to repair Shelly Drain, he led efforts in Congress to secure $150,000 for the Army Corps. to study the problem and see how it could best be fixed.

Retirement Security for Seniors

Steve Buyer did more than just talk about reducing prescription drug costs for seniors, he authored legislation to help make it happen. He and four other members wrote the law that cut costs for seniors and gave them immediate help to lower drug costs—the Medicare Drug Discount Card.

Repeal the Social Security Earnings Limit: Steve Buyer opposed the Democrat bill to lower the amount seniors could earn annually who also receives Social Security. Steve Buyer believes we should "not be penalizing them if they chose to work." Seniors should be encouraged to continue in the work force to help keep America competitive.

Medicare Advantage: Rural areas have enough challenges with health care without the federal government taking away a popular program to provide more care to seniors. Steve Buyer fought House Democrats efforts to cut this program.

Make America Safe

America is the world’s lone superpower and we must use that distinction with the responsibility that comes with it. America should always act to protect the Homeland when necessary as well as protect our allies when called upon. We should never defer our authority to protect Americans to the U.N. or to other bodies or nations.

We must provide whatever funding our troops need to fight and win the war on terrorism, including the war in Iraq. Our military is the finest in the world and when the United States when sending trooops into harms way we need to make sure they have the funding, training and equipment to win.

While our military is engaged in efforts to rout terrorist strongholds, our effort against terrorism will also be fought here at home. It is crucial that our law enforcement agencies have the tools necessary to combat and thwart those who would harm us on our own soil. The Patriot Act, while not perfect, strikes the necessary balance between our need to fight terrorism and the civil liberties of our citizens.

A veteran of the Gulf War, Steve Buyer maintains his commission in the Army Reserves with the rank of Colonel. He understands the sacrifice our military personnel make in efforts to ensure our national security. He has worked to ensure our men and women in uniform have the training, equipment and funding necessary to win the war on terrorism.

Our nation’s strategy to keep Americans safe must be to protect our borders and enforce our laws.
